If you have yet to sample the breath-taking documentaries on offer at Encounters, the 14th South African International Documentary Film Festival, happening simultaneously in Cape Town and Jozi, then make your way to your nearest participating cinema this weekend! We’ll make it all the more easier for you by telling you where to see the best ones…
Pina (Nu Metro Hyde Park, Saturday June 23, 5.45pm)
Celebrated director Wim Wenders (the man responsible for giving us Paris, Texas and Wings Of Desire) pays tribute to the late dance legend and choreographer, Pina Bausch (who sadly passed away just before filming began), by capturing the lives of her dance ensemble, the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, both on and off the stage, as they celebrate the woman who inspired them to dance. (Book online at Nu Metro); watch the trailer here.
The Island President (Nu Metro V&A Waterfront, Saturday June 23, 7.45pm)
While visitors might flock to the turquoise splendour that is the Maldives to forget their worries, residents of this Indian Ocean archipelago face up to the very real threat that their home is in danger of environmental obliteration. And it seems there’s only one man standing in the way of this disaster, former president Mohamed Nasheed.
