Lira’s BET Diary

July 16, 2012

Earlier this month, Lira hit the red carpet with the likes of Beyonce, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian at the Black Entertainment Television Awards. Since the whole of Tinseltown is obsessed with Instagram (we’re talking to you, Rihanna), Grazia asked Lira to keep a snapshot journal of her big day out – and although she didn’t take home the award for Best International Act which went to Ghana’s Sarkodie, as these pics attest, she made a proper Hollywood day of it anyway…

Radio interview with WERQ Radio in Baltimore

“In this photo I’m talking to the DJ at WERQ Radio in Baltimore, Maryland – one of many radio interviews I did that day at the Shrine Auditorium. There were tons of DJs from radio stations all over the country that were all in this one room broadcasting live to their respective cities.”

Lira with Brandy

“We took this image at the Shrine Auditorium the day before the show. I had just come out of the VIP gifting suite and saw Ms Brandy. I was able to snap a quick photo with her while we were both conducting our radio interviews.”

“This is me after the taping of BET’s Around the Globe with host April Woodard. I’m standing here with April and the BET production crew. They had a lovely silver futuristic looking set-up for the interview and the stylist Spry had outfitted me in a beautiful lemon colour one-shoulder dress. Everyone on set was super nice. A big thanks to Lilian Bossman, the rep for BET International.”

Sunday 1 July

“Putting the final touches on my make-up before I head out to the BET Awards. I stayed with relatives while in town and you can see the beautiful Massai necklace they had in the background. I felt right at home.”

“This is me in Brentwood, Los Angeles, getting ready for the BET Awards – sliding on my pumps from Errol Arendz, my favorite shoe designer!”

“I had just stepped out of the limo and onto the BET’s Red Carpet. There was so much energy from the fans behind me who were screaming for every celeb that walked in, we couldn’t even hear ourselves, but the vibe was incredible.”

“This was when all the international nominees were standing on the BET’s 106th & Park interview platform talking to the host Tyga. It was Wizkid, Sarkodie, Camp Mulla, Mokobe, Ice Prince and me. We were all representing Africa to the fullest, it was a beautiful moment.

“I got to take a picture with the lovely actress Kerry Washington. She congratulated me on my nomination for Best International Act. I loved her belt.”

“Here I am on the red carpet being interviewed for I was telling her about how it felt to be nominated at the BET Awards as a South African artist and the various designers I was wearing. This was the last interview I did before we headed into the Shrine Auditorium for the ceremony which started at 5pm.”
